Near Salamanca is Avila, a World Heritage Site and a premiere tourist spot because of its old 11th century walls, old Churches and Cathedrals, and its medieval setting. The Convent of Theresa of Avila is a major pilgrimage spot. It is a 17th century convent/Church built after St. Theresa, also the patron saint of Spain. St. Theresa of Avila was canonized in the 17th century. It is claimed that this Church was built on the same spot that St. Theresa was born.

This church contains most of her relics and even those of her friend, St. John of the Cross. It still remains a convent for some nuns but most areas within the church is open to the public. The church is designed in the medieval Baroque style with paintings of St. Theresa doing miracles and one even showing St. Theresa in the act of levitating or floating in the air. Visit the Sala de Reliquias and see the exhibit of St Theresa including that of a finger from her right hand and the sole of one of her sandals. You also may want to visit the room where St. Theresa was born. Also on display for the more religious tourists, particularly Catholics, is her old rosary and her flagellating cord. See the convent’s little garden where she played when she was a child. Pilgrims come to this place to present their petitions to St. Theresa (also known as St Therese of the Child Jesus) so tourists should not be surprised to see a lot of people in wheelchairs and other types of petitioners in this spot. It can be a delightful religious experience.

The Church of San Esteban was a Dominican Monastery built on a very high rock ground during the period between 1524 to 1610 . It is a rather huge Church with the most unique facade. During the evenings, there are a thousand lights of the Church grounds and facade. This makes the of the structure and the whole landscape even more elegant and attractive. Tourists love to take pictures of the Church of San Esteban because it appears to be a “glowing” Church.

Walk through the Church hallway and notice a star vault over the Church gallery. Also see a huge retable created by Jose Churriguera with different kinds of sculptured figures , golden paintings and murals. The whole Church is one major piece of masterwork made in the plateresque style. Its altar like facade depicts the stoning of St. Stephen, who is the first Christian saint. This church is dedicated to St. Stephen, also known as San Esteban in Spanish. Inside the church tourists can also find a museum dedicated to the Dominican missionaries and an exposition of their missionary work in the Americas during the 13th-18th century. Enjoy visiting the Gothic-Renaissance cloister which is accented by a series of mirrors which reflect the intricate dome ceiling. Climb the first floor of the the San Esteban Convent til you reach the church’s choir area where you get a better view of the altar place – a major piece of art and a exquisite period piece.

The Casa de Las Conchas (House of Shells) is the most popular building in Salamanca because it’s the only building in Spain and in the world which is all covered with sea shells. It’s facade was fashioned out of scallop shells on its brick walls which makes it appear like a shining and luminous building.

Built in the 15th century for a Spanish knight by the name of Rodrigo Maldonado, the style is mainly Gothic but it does also appear to have elements from the Renaissance period. The Casa de Las Conchas was rebuilt during the 18th century but it retains much of what it was during the 15th century. Today, this building is the main tourism office in Salamanca where thousands of tourists come to visit it and take pictures of this unique building. Outside the building is also a 15th century garden filled with flowers and trees patterned after the old Knight’s garden during the medieval times.

The New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva) in Salamanca Spain is another maverick designed Cathedral . As you enter the Cathedral you see figures that are rather surrelistic such as gargoyles, rabbits, astronaunts and other mysterious creatures. The designs on the Cathedral’s facade is fascinating. Some are baffled considering that this was built and designed in the 16th century when UFOs and astronauts were unheard of.

This New Cathedral was built in 1512 to replace an old Cathedral which was built during the 1200. Tourists visit this Cathedral also because of its rather Gothic character. There are three arcs , each of them leading to three knaves or portions of the Church. Each of these knaves have the most intricate carvings, but the most popular one is that of an astronaut’s figure in one of the knaves.Built during the 16th century, it is puzzling how the 16th century artist who designed the Cathedral ever conceived of the idea of carving a 20th century astronaut. Another amazing feature of this Cathedral is its organ which survived through three centuries. Despite an earthquake which hit in 1755, most parts of this Cathedral was damaged except for the organ which remains in perfect tune. Every white column inside the Cathedral have different carved figures.Designs on the wall include eerie figures like winged horses with a human face. A 1200 center mural which appears to be Jesus is a majestic work of art found inside the main Cathedral. Tourists can also climb up the Cathedral’s tower and see the old cracks and enjoy whole view of Salamanca.

The Palacio de Salina is a stunning 15th century palace which is one of the most well preserved palaces in Europe. Most people who visit Salamanca love seeing this castle because of its intricate moldings on its rock walls, magnificent designs and a rather extraordinary history. This was a palace commissioned by a bishop for his lover.

Ordered by Archbishop Fonseca built as a love nest for his lover, this palace is one of the most preserved Renaissance palaces in Europe which wasn’t built with any religious theme. Instead, there are carvings of Cleopatra and other female sensual figures on the walls and the main four arches. The facade is breathtaking despite the unusual theme because it has four tall rounded arches with sculptured medallions .Still more awesome is its spacious courtyard within the Palacio de Salina which offers the tourist the most wondrous sights and scents of different flowers and trees in a relaxing garden setting fit only for royalty. The Palacio de Salina is one of the most interesting attractions in Spain because while most castles and medieval buildings are built to be dedicated to saints, this one is the only one in Spain – or perhaps in the whole world - dedicated to a lover by an Archbishop.

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is one of the most famous art museums in the world because it centers its displays on the early life and all the works of Pablo Picasso and his art, particularly his paintings. Picasso’s paintings are extremely extraordinary because most of his works can be considered modern and even surrealistic. The genius of Pablo Ruiz Picasso can be gleaned through some 3000 of his paintings and other works of art that are on display in this museum.

His works reveal his relationship with Barcelona where he grew up and learned to develop his own unique art – unlike any other in the world. This museum was opened to the public in 1966 and since then has welcomed millions of visitors from all parts of the world. Moreover, the museum also houses one of the most important representation of art works done in 1917 including the series painting “Las Meninas ” which is Picasso’s 1957 grand collection . This museum has been renovated in 2008 and also holds discussions, exhibitions and art lectures. The Picasso Museum is the pride of Barcelona because of the talent of this great world renown artist who grew up and developed his art in Barcelona. The Picasso Museum used to be part of five old castles found at the Carrer de Moncada Street and is recognized also because of the building’s Catalan Civic Gothic style.

Listed as one of the most impressive works of architecture , The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is a gigantic work of architect Antonio Gaudi’s design of an ideal majestic Cathedral. He started this project in 1882 making it one of the world’s architectural wonders. The Segrada Familia Cathedral has 18 towers which appear like spindle shaped towers . The design of the whole complex is a mix of neo-modernism and the medieval. Gaudi was an unusual architect who kept changing the designs of his project while it was already under construction. He wanted to make a Church like no other in the world which would show the world all the aspects of Christendom.

Four towers on one facade represent the 12 apostles of Jesus; another cluster of four towers represent the four evangelists ; the two other cluster of four towers are supposed to be representations of Jesus and Mary. Unfortunately, Gaudi was unable to finish his project but he managed to leave his final design plans. His death seemed to stop the construction until 1950s when two more facades were completed. The Glory Facade is still under construction but part of it show scenes from the life and glory of Jesus. The Nativity facade is located on the east side. It is most admired by most visitors because of its clear Baroque fashion and style . Tourists love how the the animals in the manger are presented because of its almost “art nouveau” design. The most controversial facade however is the Passion facade which was presented to the public in 1987 because art critics thought that the huge design was simply too grotesque, but most appreciated the new design. Though the Sagrada is not yet completely finished, it remains an impressive and extraordinary work of architecture that has fascinated tourists who have visited the city of Barcelona. A birds’ eye view of the whole of Barcelona while you’re in one of the towers is certainly worth the trip. Notice also that as you enter the Cathedral, the stylized inscription at the facade is Pontius Pilate’s immoral query “Que Es La Verita?” or “What is Truth?” . Though this Cathedral is visited by millions each year, several additions and annexes are under construction. In fact, some claim that the uniqueness of the Segrada Familia Cathedral is the fact that its completion may end on 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s demise.

If you love a modern city that has everything like a foodball stadium, modern shops and a giant century old temple, then you’d love Barcelona. Barcelona was where intellectuals gathered during the 17th and 18th century. This is one reason why there are various museums in this city. Barcelona has a rich history despite the fact that at present, it’s a modern city, though not as busy as Amsterdam or Paris.

There’s the top tourist favorite Sagrada de Familia at Calle Mallorca where a giant temple was first constructed in 1882 by Antonio Gaudi. Though Gaudi has long been dead , the Sagrada de Famila has been rebuilt and improved up to this day. In fact, some say that final completion can only happen given 30 to 50 more years. The Sagrada is more than just a huge Cathedral but a whole complex. See the Segrada’s smaller chapels and churches and gardens. This edifice looks so impressive because there are more than a hundred murals and bas relief of saints and the Holy Family on the thick old walls. It also is shaped like a tower or a huge minaret. This is extraordinary since its top seems typical of Arabic architecture. See the glowing stained glass windows which seem to improve the sacred ambiance of the place. The Sagrada de Familia has more than two million tourists visiting it every year making it one of Spain’s top tourist site. The city of Barcelona also offers the L’Aquarium Barcelona, the most important marine aquarium and lesiure center in that deals about Mediterranean water species. The Aquarium has about 35 huge tanks, 11,000 animals and 450 species which is why it is visited by millions all over the world. Part of this famous Aquarium is an immense Oceantarium. Tourists may also want to visit Barcelona’s Spanish Village also called Poble Espanyol. The Poble is a replica of a real Spanish village which is designed from different other villages in Spain. It isn’t only the array of different Spanish architecture that will impress you here, but also the activities within this replica village.Enjoy seeing the the crafts, arts and the famous Flamenco show at tablao de Carmen. Barcelona also is the city of museums and is known to be where premiere museums in Europe are located. It also is a city of fun where the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, a well choreographed dance of lights and colors none like any other in Spain, can be delightfully enjoyed.
